Dig Diary:
Today was even more exciting than yesterday, and considerably much more than I thought it would be. I believe we found five artifacts, all in different quadrants. Never in the history of our dig have we found so many. Today I dug again for our group, but I also sifted a little and helped record. It was very hard to dig in our quadrant today because we got the mini shovel. Those of you who participate in the dig definitely know what I am talking about. Despite this setback, we found many interesting pieces of chipped rock. In fact, all of the groups found many pieces of white, flaky rock. Our most significant finds today were a crude skull, an ancient stick formation (probably a bed mat), and a very long spear-like stick that was charred on the end. The excavation of the stick was most interesting because it was in quadrant A but it was so long that it extended a little into our quadrant, B. Because of this I helped Mackenzie excavate it, and we were surprised to see the burnt end. Our new artifacts have led some people to believe that the group we are excavating is Homo Erectus, especially because the used fire and the stick was burnt, but I do not. I am sticking to my Australopithecine theory. Each “tool†we find is not made with the skill or care that Homo Erectus would have taken to make a tool. I also think that the burnt edge on the stick was caused by a lightning strike or natural occurrence. The skull is very short and the teeth or large. The jaw is also protruding. This leads me to believe that it is Australopithecine because their jaws were protruding and they were more ape-like. Another theory of my is Homo Habilis, because of the tools. I hope tomorrow we will find even more.
