We Begin the Dig-Athena L. Period 1

Athena Lathos
10/3/07
Entry 02
Period 1

Dig Diary:
Today we started the period with the completion of mapping and gridding out our site. It was explained to us that each quadrant of the site would be named A, B, C, and D. Artifacts discovered in that group’s quadrant would be recorded by the group recorder as ( for example, if one group was in charge of quadrant A) 1A, 2A, 3A, etc. Our group is in charge of quadrant B, on the upper right hand corner of the site. Today, I was the recorder, Zena was the digger, and Sean was the sifter. We surveyed and excavated the 0, or surface, layer of quadrant B. Us and other groups found no ancient artifacts but some strange rocks and sticks that looked as if they had been chipped or worked with. These could be possible tools but it isn’t probable. We will resume on Friday, and I hope we will have better luck then. Although I knew we wouldn’t find anything on the surface layer of the dirt because it is highly unlikely that an ancient hominid group would have artifacts left from their time when they are so old, so they should be located on a very low layer of the site. Friday we will continue our excavation of the twenty centimeters of topsoil.
